No really, this isn't supposed to work this way. Ed Carpenter and his No. 20 went fastest today with a 222.894 mph lap. Yes, you read that right... We've gone slower for the third day in a row. Yesterday was mostly due to the heat, today both the heat and the wind played a role.

Historically, when things are progressing as planned, IndyCars go faster each day until we reach the apex... Fast Friday. And just when we think they can't go any faster, we go qualifying and the drivers get light, and go for pole and setting astonishing times! Records even!

But, it is looking like we aren't going to get a real shot at Fast Friday, qualifying, or Pole day. Its the stupid weather. Starting Friday, whenever IndyCars are supposed to be on track, the forecast says it will rain. However, I never change a visit to the race track because of a forecast of rain. And usually, we find a window at some point in the day to work the sessions in.

Keep your fingers crossed. I love it when the cars go full out, wiggle, and amaze!

However, today the cars were wiggling for a different reason which Graham Rahal summed up best "Im coming in, this is stupid." Twenty to thirty mph wind gusts will do that.

Second quick in the conditions was Scott Dixon and his No. 9 Honda with a lap of 222.599 mph. Behind Dixon was JR Hildebrand but he was two full mph slower.

The rest of the field was in the two hundred high teens, led by.... Fernando Alonso! The two-time Formula One F1 champion turned a svelte 39 laps, went slower for the third day in a row, but moved well up the time charts for his best overall results so far.

Well done Fernando. Well, ok... maybe a bit early for a slap on the back considering a number of cars sat out todays session, but it was good experience for Alonso in tricky conditions.

Alonso commented earlier in the day, It has been a good experience so far. Busy from Barcelona to here, so yeah, actually today is the first night that I slept more or less OK without too much jetlag. Feeling better and better, physically and also with the car as well. Every lap I feel better in the car, able to feel the setup changes a little bit.

Next up, the IndyCar series will practice for a fourth time on Thursday.

1 Ed Carpenter 222.894
