By Mike Sulka

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."

- Henry David Thoreau

Henry David Thoreau spent two years, two months and two days roaming the woods around Walden Pond. He absorbed the natural beauty abounding in the trees. Above all else, Thoreau glorified the virtue of simple living and the importance of "peace of mind".

In doing so, he removed himself from the normal life of a nearby city. He reduced his material needs by living simply, and his reduced his burdens by decreasing his reliance on material possessions.

In some ways, it was the ultimate expression of his humanity. His mind, his soul, his position in life all dedicated to the pursuit of happiness, and peace by removing himself from everyday life.

Simplicity is a key in life.

Just two days, into my first journey to Road America, it was easy to see why fans and drivers loved this fantastic venue.

People searching and finding the ultimate experience and "peace of mind" by removing themselves from the normal day-to-day life. No work concerns. A little money. Each person finding their place on the wooded countryside. RVs, campers, tents, dogs, kids, families... They all arrived at Elkhart Lake to enjoy a thin piece of pavement winding up, and down the rolling hills. IndyCars were brought in, and the perfect touch was added to the ambiance.

Road America is "Road Racing at its best".

The ambiance was apparent before my arrival. The scenic beauty displayed while driving up I-43 during Friday morningís sunrise was magnificent. The farms, the barns, the local communities. The spectacular glimpses of Lake Michigan. The hay bales, the silos, a coffee shop meeting I observed at the local McDonalds.

Road America is one of the best parts of America.

On Fridays, when I arrive at a venue, I usually "walk" the venue. That means walking around the entire circuit. I try to look at the entry, and exit of each corner, and get a feel for the terrain. My Friday walk around Road America was amazing.

Let me re-phrase.. The hike.

If you really want to experience Road America bring your hiking boots. Climb the hills, walk back to the carousel, and view the exit of that fabulous turn from high on the hillside by the Briggs & Stratton Motorplex. Road America is 4.048 miles long. My two days only wet my appetite for adding this venue to my annual list of "required" venues.

Try doing the following at any other venue: Walk through the woods, and just listen. Listen to the IndyCars as they drive by. Listen, as they approach on your left (Turn 6). The cars rising to the apex of the hill. They turn and then accelerateÖ the engines hum fades as they descend through Hurry Downs towards Turn 8. Hold still. Continue to listen. As the IndyCars go around the Carousel, the intensity will again increase as the IndyCars race past on your right through Kettle Bottoms, and thunder into the distance towards Canada Corner.

In the woods, you canít see the car. The forest is thick. You can only hear the car. The engine resonance is broken up by singing birds and scurrying squirrels.

Welcome back to the 2016 IndyCar schedule. Road America is a special place.

Thousands of die-hard road racing fans have made the pilgrimage to Road America. And if their voices arenít loud enough, listen to the drivers.

Ryan Hunter-Reay expressed his thoughts about the remarkable venue, "This track is the best track in the United States of America, by far. This is what I'm so jealous about the European series ... It's such a rewarding race track and it's for sure the most fun, by far."

Tony Kanaan said, "I know we all keep saying it, but it's so nice to be back here on-track at Road America."

Add Graham Rahal's list to those who praise this track, "It's awesome to be here at Road America. On the out laps you see all the fans and it's spectacular. There are people everywhere and we can't thank (Verizon IndyCar Series) fans enough. This proves to everyone that has never been here what Road America is all about."

Just one visit by a fan, or one drive by a driver leads to the conclusion that this remarkable venue belongs on the IndyCar Schedule.

Forever.

No questions asked.

If you havenít been here, you need to cast aside all the material issues to experience the simple joys found here. It would be a tragedy to "discover that you had not lived" because you never visited Road America.

Road America is more than "outhouses and picnic tables". Road America is a tradition worth living year after year. Road America is worth passing on from generation to generation. Mario Andretti said it best, "(the) traditions and soul of the sport must have some value alongside business decisions."

With Road America on the IndyCar schedule, we can simply say that we have lived, and found our "peace of mind" in the woods of Road America.
