In front of 35,000, IndyCar driver Ed Carpenter and his No. 20 Chevrolet beat the big teams and has taken a dramatic Pole at the 2013 Indianapolis Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Indiana with a 4-lap average of 228.762 mph. For Carpenter, it is his first Pole of the 2013 IndyCar season, and second of his IndyCar career. It is also his first Pole at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

With the Pole, Carpenter will take home a $100,000 bonus. Overall, 13 entries eclipsed last year's Pole speed of 226.484 mph turned by Scott Dixon.

On the team front Andretti Autosport dominated the fast nine with five cars in the session, and Team Penske putting three cars into the session.

Qualifying second was Andretti Autosport rookie Carlos Munoz and his No. 26 Chevrolet with a 4-lap average of 228.342 mph.

Also starting on the front row will be Marco Andretti with a 228.261 mph Pole run.

EJ Viso will start fourth with AJ Allmendinger rounding out the top five qualifiers.

Alex Tagliani and his No. 98 was the fastest Honda qualifier, he'll start the race in 11th.

Pole day qualifying started with rain about 30 minutes ahead of scheduled qualifying, which ulimately turned into a 2.5 hour rain delay. At that point, IndyCar officials changed the schedule for the remainder of the afternoon with top-24 qualifying running until 6PM, followed by Pole qualifying at 6:30 PM.

A number of entries were bumped from the top-24 with the final qualifier setting a 4-lap average of _ mph. Teams were attempting to get qualified so that during Sunday open track periods they could focus on race day setups.

There were no major accidents during the day. Conor Daly's and his No. 41 Honda engine did let him down, but without an on-track incident.
