2010 Atlanta II: Regan Smith NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Recap

Regan Smith had another solid outing behind the wheel of the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet, finishing 17th in Sunday night's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It was the 11th time in the first 25 races this season that he has posted a final result of 21st or better.

Smith, who started the 325-lap, 500-mile event from the 27th position, patiently moved forward on the 1.54-mile oval and when the race was restarted for the final time on Lap 308 he was running in 11th place.

"I thought we had a shot at a top 10, but just didn't have enough speed at the end," said Smith, who recently signed a two-year contract extension with Furniture Row Racing. "But overall it was a good day. We continue to pick away and improve at each race. We've come a long way and know we have the potential to produce strong performances as we head into the homestretch of the season."

With finishes of 14th and 17th at Atlanta Motor Speedway this season, Smith said that he is pleased with the progress he is making at a track that he has not felt comfortable on in the past. Before 2010, Smith only had two career Cup starts at Atlanta -- both coming in the 2008 season. His finishes that year were 38th and 30th.

"Atlanta has never been an easy track for me," said the 26-year-old Smith. "But the more I race here the better I like it and the better I feel. The two finishes we had here this season have definitely lifted my confidence level and I do look forward to coming back next year."

The Atlanta race winner was Tony Stewart, his first victory of the season. Rounding out the top-five in order were: Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Burton and Kyle Busch.

The next stop for the Sprint Cup Series is Saturday night (Sept. 11) at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway.
