Shell And Motiva Volunteers Join NASCAR Driver Kevin Harvick
On their way to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway, driver Kevin Harvick and the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil crew from Richard Childress Racing made a pit stop at the Houston Salvation Army Boys' and Girls' Club for the Shell and Motiva United Way Day of Caring. Harvick, Several race team crew members, and approximately 125 Shell and Motiva volunteers participated by re-tilling a baseball field, sprucing up landscaping, refurbishing the children’s area, and painting and organizing storage rooms at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club. The United Way Day of Caring is just one demonstration of how Shell and Motiva support United Way. For 60 years, Shell has been supporting United Way, and in the last 20 years, has contributed more than than $111 million.

Shell and Motiva volunteers began working at 9 a.m., Thursday, October 30, at The Salvation Army Boys’ & Girls’ Club, Aldine Westfield Branch. Shell and Motiva’s United Way Campaign is an employee/retiree program providing the opportunity for individuals to make monetary and/or sweat equity donations to the United Way of Greater Houston. Employees are provided release time (time away during normal working hours for employees to volunteer) to participate in corporate-sponsored outreach efforts.
NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick, who currently sits fifth in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) championship point standings, was excited to join Shell and Motiva volunteers for the event. With just three races remaining in the 2008 racing season, Harvick remains in contention for the NSCS title.
Kevin Harvick is no stranger to the Houston community and actually paid a visit to City Hall before the Texas race in 2007. “About this time last year, I was given a great honor by the City of Houston with the proclamation of Kevin Harvick Day on November 1,” said Harvick. “The commemoration was very special because it represents my link to the community through our sponsor, Shell Oil Company,”
“Coming here today and pitching in to help support a great cause with Shell and United Way is just a small way that I can give back to the Houston community. Shell has been very active with the United Way and a great partner over the years on many programs, and we wanted to show our support for their efforts."
Several members of the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Crew joined Harvick in the activities: The No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Crew included: Chris Chase - Shock Specialist, Clint Pittman - General Mechanic, Chris Tidwell - General Mechanic, Scott Naset - Car Chief/Catch Can Man, Bill O’Dea - Spotter/Brake Specialist , Steve Brown - Tire Specialist.
