Football family mourns René Hüssy

The football family is mourning René Hüssy, the 78-year-old former Swiss national coach and long-serving FIFA instructor, who passed away yesterday (Sunday, 11 March 2007) in his hometown of Zurich after a long, serious illness.

As a player, René Hüssy, born on 19 October 1928, won three Swiss league titles and three Swiss cups with Lausanne-Sports and Grasshopper-Club Zurich. Hüssy also coached the Swiss national team twice, in 1970 and again from 1973 to 1976, for a total of 26 games. At club level, he coached FC Winterthur for eight years (1963-1970) as well as Grasshoppers for three years (1971-1973), leading the latter to the Swiss league title in 1971.

Hüssy was one of the few home-grown coaches in the Swiss top flight in the 1970s, and in Zug in 1980, he became a founding member and the very first president of the Union of Swiss Football Trainers (USFT). He later became an honorary member of the USFT.

Internationally, Hüssy served FIFA and UEFA in a variety of roles for more than three decades. Hüssy joined FIFA in 1977 as a technical instructor in the governing body’s development programmes, and from 1988 to 1990 he was a member of the FIFA Technical Committee before spending eight years (1990-1998) on the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup™. He was also part of FIFA’s panel of Technical Study Group experts between 1982 and 1998. In addition to his work for FIFA, Hüssy held a number of official roles at UEFA, including deputy chairman of the Technical Development Committee.

At the FIFA Congress in Seoul on 28 May 2002, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter presented René Hüssy with the FIFA Order of Merit in recognition of his life’s work.

“In René Hüssy, we have lost not only an excellent football expert, but above all a valuable companion to whom FIFA owes so much,” said FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter. “On a personal level, I have lost a loyal friend who was always honest with me. It was precisely this honesty that I appreciated the most about René Hüssy. I send my sincerest condolences to his family on behalf of the entire worldwide football community.”
