D.C. United re-signs Brian Carroll

D.C. United announced today the club has re-signed veteran midfielder Brian Carroll. The 25-year old was originally drafted by United with the 11th overall pick in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft. Per Major League Soccer policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are very pleased to have reached an agreement to keep Brian at D.C. United,” said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. “He has been an integral part of our team's success during the last several years and we look forward to him playing a big role in helping us to achieve our future goals.”

Carroll has been one of the most consistent players for the Black-and-Red over the last three seasons. After not making an appearance during his rookie season under Ray Hudson, the midfielder made 90 consecutive appearances from April 3, 2004 to September 23, 2006 - the second longest such streak in MLS history (Kevin Hartman 93). He led United in minutes played in both 2006 (2,779) and 2004 (2,438) and has totaled two goals and seven assists during his career in D.C. A native of Springfield, Virginia, Carroll has also earned a handful of call-ups to the U.S. Men’s National Team and three caps over the last two years.

“As a player that has grown up in the shadows of RFK Stadium, I'm happy that Brian will remain with D.C. United,” said United Co-managing Partner Will Chang. “Brian is a credit to our organization both on and off of the field and we look forward to his continued contributions. ”

United begins competitive play in 2007 on February 21 when it travels to Honduras to meet CD Olimpia (9 p.m. EST) in the first round of the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel (FSC) and North Cone, the tournament’s broadcast partner for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. It will also be shown delayed on Fox Sports Espanol (FSE) at 11 p.m. EST. The club’s first home game will take place on March 1 in the return leg versus Olimpia with a 7 p.m. kickoff at RFK Stadium. The home game will be shown live on FSC, FSE and North Cone.
