D.C. United statement regarding Federal and District of Columbia Government Real Property Act of 2005

D.C. United President and CEO Kevin Payne today issued the following statement after today's Senate approval of the Federal and District of Columbia Government Real Property Act of 2005. The bill transfers several large pieces of federal property to the District of Columbia, including Poplar Point in Anacostia, in exchange for the federal government receiving several pieces of land currently owned by the District.

“I am very pleased Congress has taken this historic step toward the continued development and revitalization of the District of Columbia. This is a big day for the Nation’s Capital and we congratulate Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and city officials for this achievement. I am especially encouraged by the city's plans for us to build a new soccer stadium and mixed-use development East of the River. I firmly believe Poplar Point is an ideal location for our new home, our fans and most importantly for our neighbors in Anacostia.

“I’d like to especially thank Congresswoman Norton, OMB Director Rob Portman, Congressman Tom Davis, and Senators George Voinovich and Daniel Akaka for their leadership on this legislation. Without their efforts, this project would not be possible.

“Passage of the Land Transfer Bill is an important step toward D.C. United staying in the District and making a major investment in the DC community. We will work with Mayor-elect Fenty, the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission, other city agencies and the people of Anacostia to finalize plans for a development anchored by United’s new stadium.”
