"I watched the race on television and I couldn't believe the two cars weren't breaking down, because I know if I had been there, at least one of them would have broken down."
-- Jacques Villeneuve - December, 2003 commenting on his former F1 team's (BAR) reliability following his departure. |

2009 NASCAR Cup, Nationwide, and Truck Series Schedules Announced
NASCAR announced today its national series schedules for the 2009 season, which features realigned dates for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Truck Series.
In the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series there will be a three-way date swap between Atlanta Motor Speedway, Auto Club Speedway (formerly California Speedway) and Talladega Superspeedway.
• Atlanta’s second 2009 race will be held on Sunday, Sept. 6, taking the Labor Day weekend slot now held by Auto Club Speedway.
• Auto Club Speedway’s second race will be Sunday, Oct. 11 – the fourth week of the “Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup,” a slot formerly held by Talladega.
• Talladega’s second event will move to Sunday, Nov. 1, making it the seventh Chase event – the slot formerly held by Atlanta.
“The 2009 schedule reflects realigned dates that are good opportunities for everyone involved in our sport – fans, sponsors, tracks and teams," said NASCAR President Mike Helton.

Michigan: NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Results - Edwards, Ford Win

Carl Edwards took home the NASCAR Sprint Cup victory at Michigan! Credit: CIA Stock Photo
It was Old West style showdown stuff -- Kyle "Rowdy" Busch vs. Carl "Mr. Clean" Edwards.
On the final restart, there were two laps for all the gold after 400 miles of lead-swapping between NASCAR's hard-charging gunslingers.
Edwards, in this one, gunned Busch down, blowing him away in a two-lap dash at the end. The No. 99 driver earned 10 more bonus points, cutting the gap between him and the No. 18 team to forty points heading into the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
It was Edwards' fifth win of the year. And, once again, Jack Roush's stable of Fords proved to be too much for the competition at this two-mile speed palace beyond the suburbs of Detroit in what is known as Michigan's Irish Hills.

The Doctor Scores Brno Victory, Rossi Extends MotoGP Lead Over Stoner

Valentino Rossi was again maximized his results, while reigning MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner didn't. Courtesy of Fiat Yamaha
Valentino Rossi once again benefitted from Casey Stoner´s misfortune for a second consecutive MotoGP victory, crossing the finish line first at the Cardion ab Grand Prix Ceske republiky. The Fiat Yamaha rider´s win –coupled with an early crash from his title rival- increased his lead to 50 points in the standings and gave a crucial boost to his World Championship chances.
Stoner was caught by surprise on the sixth lap when out in front. He had over a second´s worth of advantage over Rossi after taking the holeshot, but slipped his front wheel out on the new Brno asphalt and was lowsided into the gravel. It was Stoner´s first DNF since his joining the Ducati Marlboro team for the 2007 season.

Loeb Dominates Deutschland For Seventh Straight WRC Victory

It's Loeb again! The Citroen WRC driver won the Germany Rally for the seventh time in-a-row! Courtesy of Citroen
Sébastien Loeb has won the ADAC Rallye Deutschland (August 14th – 17th) for the seventh time in a row and thus established a new record with his Citroën C4 WRC. In the field of 81 teams, nobody was able to stop Loeb from leading all the way. Finnish Ford drivers Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala or Belgian Francois Duval with the Stobart-Ford had their trouble keeping the pace of the Frenchman, who was well protected by his team-mate Dani Sordo (Spain).
Loeb set the fastest time on 14 of the 19 timed stages and thus dominantly secured himself his seventh win of the season. For Loeb, it was his 43rd WRC win and took the lead in the points’ standings with 76 points from Hirvonen (72). “I don’t want to speculate about defending the title yet”, said Loeb, referring to the world championship season that goes on until December.

Suffering Stoner Sends The Doctor Away For Brno MotoGP Pole

Stoner took his sixth straight MotoGP pole during qualifying for the Czech Republic Grand Prix. Wow!! Courtesy of Ducati Marlboro
Despite feeling less than 100% with a fever, there was no stopping Casey Stoner from taking a sixth successive pole position for the Cardion ab Grand Prix Ceske republiky, as the Australian imposed his will on his rivals in a wet qualifying session.
Stoner recorded a fastest time of 2´11.657 in the soaking session, giving him the longest pole streak since fellow countryman Mick Doohan´s twelve-in-a-row from 1997. In doing so, he relegated MotoGP´s self-styled `Doctor´ -World Championship leader Valentino Rossi- down to second on the grid. Rossi was suffering his own ailment on Saturday, with an ear and sinus infection posing him problems. Even with their respective medical woes, both Stoner and Rossi can be expected to battle against each other once more in Brno when the red light goes out on Sunday.

Brian Vickers and his No. 83 Red Bull Toyota won the Pole Award for the 3M Performance 400 presented by Bondo with a lap of 38.189 seconds, 188.536 mph. This is his fifth pole in 159 NASCAR Cup Series races, and his first pole and fifth top-10 start in 2008. This is also his first pole in 10 races at Michigan International Speedway.
Joining Vickers on the front row will be Jimmie Johnson and his No. 48 Lowe's/Kobalt Tools Chevrolet. The Hendrick driver posted his 18th top-10 start of 2008 and his ninth in 14 races at Michigan International Speedway.

Hearts and Minds Race on RadioGuest Column By Cathy Elliott
I have been hearing some controversy lately about a comment made by racer-turned-TV-commentator Kyle Petty; it's been a hot topic on NASCAR radio for several days running. Apparently, Petty said something to the effect that the radio broadcasters calling a recent race were deliberately making a boring event sound exciting for the benefit of their listeners.
Petty considered this a bad thing. I consider it customer service.
The incident reminded me of a similar circumstance in another sport. A few years ago, in response to complaints directed against what were termed "distracting and annoying broadcasters," the NFL engaged in a fun little experiment.

Sebastien Loeb Dominates German Rally WRC Opening Day
Frenchman Sébastien Loeb is again making his mark on the ADAC Rallye Deutschland (August 14th-17th). The Citroën driver already won the German round of the World Rally Championship six times already and on the opening day, Loeb already showed his ambitions for yet another win.
Six fastest stage times on six special stages underlined his continuing dominance from Finn Mikko Hirvonen (Ford) and Spaniard Dani Sordo (Citroën). However, Loeb admits: “I am absolutely driving at the limit as Mikko Hirvonen is putting me under massive pressure.” Hirvonen, who is leading in the World Championship standings, does by no means give in: “When Sébastian is making only a slight mistake, I am right there.”
